2. Focus group background information and questions

The focus groups were held in the Wellington and Manawatu regions. The focus group discussions were structured around a set of questions developed by the Centre for Research, Evaluation and Social Assessment (CRESA) in consultation with the Bioethics Council.

The following areas were explored (the full schedule is attached as Appendix 1):

  1. Technologies of interest or concern
  2. Prior knowledge of stem cell research
  3. Information needed for public engagement in discussion
  4. Public comment on the development of technologies
  5. Raising the profile of biotechnologies
  6. Distribution of information about technologies
  7. Lessons learned from the previous focus groups.

The following sections of the report summarise the findings from the focus group discussions. While the report provides some reference to the sources of some of the views, given the small number of focus groups, it would not be appropriate to extrapolate from these to assume that other similar groups might share similar views.
