3.0 Research Objectives

The key objectives to be met by this research were to:

  1. Explore public perceptions about the use of human embryos for research purposes.
  2. Explore public views about “consent rights” or “ownership” of human embryos and who should be making these decisions (the parents, the government, the scientific community).
  3. Explore public perceptions about any differences in the ethics of using different types of embryos (i.e. those resulting from donated sperm and eggs versus embryos resulting from unimplanted IVF procedures or embryos resulting from adult cell cloning).
  4. Provide an opportunity for the general public to express their views towards the cultural, ethical and spiritual issues surrounding human embryo research and engage in the discussion.
  5. From the above, identify the broad themes and patterns relating to public perceptions of human embryo research.
  6. To help motivate the general public to become involved in ACART’s formal consultation process and to seek further information about human embryo research.
