Submission by Bioethics Council to ACART on Aspects of Assisted Reproductive Technology

September 2007

In early 2007, Toi te Taiao: the Bioethics Council (the Council) decided to undertake a major deliberative dialogue project with the New Zealand public on prebirth testing. Prebirth testing includes the testing of human foetuses and embryos. The testing of embryos is done using preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).

From the outset of the prebirth testing project, the Council was mindful that the Advisory Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ACART) would be reviewing New Zealand’s guidelines in 2007 on a range of assisted reproductive procedures including PGD. The Council decided it would make a submission to ACART, which would take into account views it had heard during the prebirth testing project.

ACART received the Council’s written submission on 1 September 2007. The Council also made an oral submission to ACART on 5 September 2007.
