The Council:

  • Is supported by the Council Secretariat.
  • Provides advice to and reports to the Minister for the Environment.
  • Provides advice to other related Government Ministers, eg: Ministers of Health, Science, Agriculture and Māori Affairs
  • Liaises with Government Departments, Crown agencies and bodies established under statute e.g. ERMA , Health Research Council, National Advisory Committee on Health and Disability Support Services Ethics, Animal ethics committees.
  • Provides information to the New Zealand public and stakeholders eg: independent ethics committees, Māori, biotechnology users, researchers (Government and non-Government), regulators, businesses, interest groups, media.
  • Promotes dialogue and participation with and between the New Zealand public and stakeholders.
